چکیده

In a study of more than 3000 participants from nine countries, we explored peoples’ preferences for the conservation two groups species that frequently interact with humans: large carnivores (n = 29 in order Carnivora average adult body mass > 15 kg), and wild canids felids 73 species). Do Users Always Know What’s Good For Them? Utilising Physiological Responses to Assess Media Quality

Subjective methods are widely used to determine whether audio and video quality in networked multimedia applications is sufficient. Recent findings suggest that, due to contextual factors, users often accept levels of media quality known to be below the threshold required for such tasks. Therefore, we propose the use of physiological methods to assess the user cost of different levels of media ...

Know When to Hold Them, Know When to Fold Them: Dealer Behavior in Highly Illiquid Risky Assets

This study examines dealer behavior in a sample of 14,749 corporate bonds that vary in credit rating and liquidity. Our unique data set allows us to identify purchases and sales by individual dealers, enabling us to determine how long a dealer holds a bond purchase in inventory and how much of that initial purchase the dealer sold to customers, and the spread on those sales to customers, and ho...

How dogs know when communication is intended for them.

Domestic dogs comprehend human gestural communication in a way that other animal species do not. But little is known about the specific cues they use to determine when human communication is intended for them. In a series of four studies, we confronted both adult dogs and young dog puppies with object choice tasks in which a human indicated one of two opaque cups by either pointing to it or gaz...

CONSERVATION. To save caribou, Alberta wants to fence them in.

T he Little Smoky caribou herd of western Alberta province is among the most imperiled in Canada, its few dozen animals threatened by oil and gas development, logging, and hungry wolves. Soon, the herd could also become a high-profile test case for a controversial plan to save some of Canada’s woodland caribou from extinction: herding them into pens enclosing 100 square kilometers or more and r...
